India denounces destruction of temple in Dhaka, says interim govt allowed it

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday denounced the destruction of a Durga temple in the Bangladeshi capital and said the development reflected the inability of the interim government in Dhaka to protect the country’s Hindu minority and their religious institutions.

Ministry of external affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addresses a press conference in New Delhi (File) (@MEAIndia/PTI)

The remarks by external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal came against the backdrop of a sharp downturn in bilateral ties since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government last August and the installation of a caretaker administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. India has criticised the interim government on numerous occasions for its failure to prevent the repression of Bangladesh’s religious minorities.

With India and Bangladesh set to hold negotiations for renewing the Ganga Water Treaty of 1996, which is set to expire next year, Jaiswal told a weekly media briefing that New Delhi is prepared to engage with Dhaka on all matters in an environment conducive to mutually beneficial dialogue.

Jaiswal criticised Bangladeshi authorities for the demolition of the Durga temple in Dhaka. “We understand that extremists were clamouring for demolishing the Durga temple in Khilkhet, Dhaka,” he said.

“The interim government, instead of providing security to the temple, projected the episode as illegal land use… and allowed the destruction of the temple today [Thursday].”

He added, “This has resulted in damage to the deity before it was shifted. We are dismayed that such incidents continue to recur in Bangladesh.”

Jaiswal emphasised the Bangladeshi interim government’s responsibility to protect Hindus, their properties and religious institutions.

He responded to a question about the renewal of the Ganga Water Treaty by saying that India and Bangladesh share 54 cross-border rivers, including the Ganga. “To discuss all relevant issues that form part of this cooperation, the two countries have a bilateral mechanism in place, which is the Joint Rivers Commission. We also have consultations of concerned state governments… in our own internal consultations on such issues to frame our approach,” he said.

“We are prepared to engage with Bangladesh on all matters in an environment that is conducive for mutually beneficial dialogue,” he added.

Asked about India’s decision to curb Bangladeshi exports via land ports, Jaiswal said the measures were based on Dhaka’s own quest for “fairness, equal treatment and reciprocity”. He said: “We await resolution of the underlying issues pending with the Bangladeshi side for a long time. These issues have been raised by India at several structured meetings earlier, including at the commerce secretary-level talks.”

Last month, India curbed Bangladesh’s exports of ready-made garments and several consumer goods through land ports in order to ensure fairness and equality in bilateral trade. These restrictions were imposed weeks after New Delhi ended a nearly five-year-old arrangement for trans-shipment of Bangladeshi cargo to third countries via Indian airports and ports.

'Very big one': Donald Trump hints India, US on cusp of 'great' trade deal; 10 things to know

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) said a “very big” trade deal with India could be on the cards, days after signing a new agreement with China. Speaking at the “Big Beautiful Bill” event at the White House, Trump said the US was “going to open up India,” hinting at significant progress toward a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement between the two strategic partners.

Here are 10 key points to know as Trump hints at the upcoming deal and where it stands as of now:'Very big' deal with India comingPresident Trump suggested that the US is close to finalising a major trade pact with India, calling it a “very big one” that could open up new economic opportunities between the two nations. "Everybody wants to make a deal and have a part of it. Remember a few months ago, the press was saying, 'You really have anybody of any interest? Well, we just signed with China yesterday. We are having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one. Where we're going to open up India, in the China deal, we are starting to open up China," he said. Also read: Energy, agriculture and tariffs; what will be in the 'very big' pactIndia-US trade talks in full swingThis comes as a senior-level Indian delegation, led by Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agarwal, is in Washington to hold discussions aimed at narrowing gaps in the proposed bilateral agreement.Read more: Indian team in US for fresh talks on trade dealTrade deal expected to target key sectorsThough not officially disclosed, the India-US deal is expected to cover areas such as digital trade, tariffs, market access, pharmaceuticals, electronics, agriculture, and defence-related supply chains.

Agriculture emerges as a key hurdleSources say that tariff concessions on farm products—especially maize and soybean—have become a sticking point. India is reportedly cautious about opening up its market to genetically modified crops prevalent in US agriculture.US commerce secretary expects early resolutionSpeaking earlier this month, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick expressed optimism, stating both countries are in a “very good place” and that an agreement could come “in the not-too-distant future.”India insists on fair and balanced dealUnion Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has reiterated that India will not settle for any agreement that undermines its economic or strategic interests. The goal is a “fair, equitable, and balanced” outcome.Trump keeps trade focused and selectiveEmphasising a tougher trade stance, Trump said the US won’t make deals with everyone: “Some we are just going to send them a letter… you are to pay 25, 35, 45 per cent.”Rare earths feature in China agreementTrump gave the update on the potential trade deal while acknowledging the agreeement with China. He did not reveal specifics of that deal either, but the White House confirmed it builds on a May agreement in Geneva, with China agreeing to supply critical materials like rare earths and magnets.Markets watching India nextWith the China deal stabilising investor sentiment, attention has now shifted to India as the next major trade milestone. A successful pact could enhance India’s global trade profile.Talks gain urgency ahead of tariff deadlineThe ongoing negotiations come ahead of a July 9 deadline, when India is slated to impose reciprocal tariffs of up to 26 per cent. Although Trump earlier announced a 90-day suspension, both sides are pushing for a breakthrough before the window close- making this round of talks particularly consequential.

Outrageous: Iran says US strikes on N-sites will have everlasting consequences

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Sunday condemned the United States for launching airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling it a serious violation of international law, the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

In a strongly worded statement posted on X, Araghchi accused the US, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, of “criminal behavior” by targeting what he described as peaceful nuclear installations.

“The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior,” Iranian Foreign Minister said in a post.

Calling on the global community to take notice, he said every UN member should be alarmed by the “dangerous and lawless” actions taken by Washington.

Citing provisions under the UN Charter, Araghchi also added that Iran reserves all options in exercising its right to self-defense.

“In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people,” the post added.

Few moments after the Foreign Minister’s post, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a strong condemnation, calling the attacks a direct assault on its sovereignty. The ministry labeled the strikes "unprecedented" and called on the United Nations Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take immediate action.

In a strongly worded statement, Iranian officials accused the US of breaching the UN Charter, especially Article 2(4), which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity of any state. The Foreign Ministry also claimed the strikes violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and undermined the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.

Iran declared it has the right to respond with full force to defend its sovereignty, while also criticizing the IAEA for what it called "biased conduct" in favor of “warmongering parties.” Tehran warned that silence from the international community in the face of U.S. actions would lead to “unprecedented and widespread danger.”

Additionally, Iran’s Foreign Ministry warned international institutions that remaining silent in the face of US aggression could expose the world to unprecedented danger, adding that the global community must not forget it was the US that initiated war against Iran during an ongoing diplomatic process.

Calling on the UN to convene an emergency session, Iran said that the US was acting outside international norms and enabling “a genocidal, occupying regime.”

The statement follows a US military operation that targeted three major Iranian nuclear sites: Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan last night. Trump described the US strikes on Iran as "an amazing success." He urged Iran to make peace and cease further actions, warning that any continued aggression would result in additional strikes.

While talking to the media, Trump confirmed that six bunker buster bombs were deployed on the Fordow facility. Hannity also reported that 30 Tomahawk missiles, launched from US submarines positioned 400 miles away, targeted the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites in Iran.

Why the US used B-2 stealth bombers, costing $2.1 billion each, to strike Iran’s nuclear sites

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday confirmed that American forces carried out coordinated strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. The move places the U.S. directly alongside Israel in efforts to dismantle Tehran’s nuclear capabilities, even as Iran threatens retaliation that could potentially widen tensions across the region.

The decision to directly involve the US in the war comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that aimed to systematically eradicate the country’s air defences and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.

“We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan," Trump said in a post on social media. "All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.”

Trump added in a later post that he would address the nation at 10 p.m. Eastern time (7:30 AM IST), writing “This is an HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ISRAEL, AND THE WORLD. IRAN MUST NOW AGREE TO END THIS WAR. THANK YOU!”

Trump said B-2 stealth bombers were used but did not specify what types of bombs were dropped. The White House and Pentagon did not immediately elaborate on the operation.

Why US used B-2 bombers?

B-2 bombers are the only plane capable of carrying the Massive Ordinance Penetrator, which experts have highlighted as the only type of bomb potentially capable of destroying Iran’s underground Fordow nuclear facility. ALSO READ: In his own words: Trump's Iran strike tests his rhetoric on ending wars

What are B-2 bombers?

The U.S. B-2 costs about $2.1 billion each, making it the most expensive military aircraft ever built. Made by Northrop Grumman, the bomber, with its cutting-edge stealth technology, began its production run in the late 1980s but was curbed by the fall of the Soviet Union. Only 21 were made after the Pentagon's planned acquisition program was truncated.

The bomber's range of over 6,000 nautical miles (11,112 km) without refueling enables global strike capabilities from continental U.S. bases. With aerial refueling, the B-2 can reach virtually any target worldwide, as demonstrated in missions from Missouri to Afghanistan and Libya and now Iran.

Its payload capacity of more than 40,000 pounds (18,144 kg) allows the aircraft to carry a diverse array of conventional and nuclear weapons. The bomber's internal weapons bays are specifically designed to maintain stealth characteristics while accommodating large ordnance loads which could include two GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator), a 30,000-pound precision-guided "bunker buster" bomb.

Reports said six bunker buster bombs were used on Iran's Fordow research site.

The B-2's two-pilot crew configuration reduces personnel requirements while maintaining operational effectiveness through advanced automation systems.

The B-2's stealth technology incorporates radar-absorbing materials and angular design features that minimize detection by enemy air defense systems. Its radar cross-section is reportedly comparable to that of a small bird, making it nearly invisible to conventional radar.

Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP)

The 30,000-pound MOP represents the largest conventional bomb in the U.S. arsenal, specifically engineered to defeat hardened underground bunkers. Its massive size requires the B-2 to carry only one or two MOPs per mission, but provides unmatched bunker-penetration capability.

The weapon's 20.5-foot (6.25-m) length and GPS-guided precision targeting system enable accurate strikes against specific underground facilities. Its penetration capability of over 200 feet through hardened concrete makes it effective against the world's most protected underground installations.

Ramen Lovers In Disbelief As Packet Carries Cancer Warning

People often go for ramen noodles for a quick, comforting and filling snack. Whether you’re living alone or rushing to get ready for work, a 10-minute bowl feels like an ultimate solution. For many, it’s a go-to snack.

But now, a recent video is going viral on social media that has left people completely stunned and made them take a second look at their favourite instant meal. An Instagram user shared a video showing a warning label that was printed on the back of a ramen noodle packet that read, “Warning: Cancer and Reproductive Harm". He expressed shock after knowing instant ramen noodles come with this warning.

As soon as he posted the video, it left viewers shocked and full of questions.

A person commented, “A lot of times, the packaging itself is toxic. The heat printed wrappers leach chemicals into your skin at levels above the minimum decided safe exposure amount. That requires them to apply the cancer/hormone disruptor warning."

Another wrote, “Eating spicy too much every day can increase the risk of cancer. Once in 3-4 months is enough."

“Nearly everything we eat can do damage if we eat it too much, but every now and then shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve had it a few times, maybe 6 times a year. I would eat it more, but it’s too spicy," commented another.

Nutrition expert Cara Harbstreet said, “Packaged instant noodles, including most ramen varieties, rely heavily on sodium for flavour." According to the Food and Drug Administration, “The flavour packets that come with packaged ramen are often very high in sodium (up to 90% of the Daily Value)."

The United States Department of Agriculture states that an 81-gram packet of ramen noodles has 14 grams of total fat and 6.58 grams of total saturated fat, or about 33% of the daily recommended amount.

Ramen noodles contain a lot of MSG, which is believed to cause severe health problems such as chronic headaches, nausea, weakness, muscle tightness, and chest pain.
